Tools and Suppies for the Road

This list is intened to be a guide to help you assemble items to keep your car going. If you think of something we are missing let us know!

  • Specs for your car (this booklet should help you with much of that)

  • AAA or insurance card with towing

  • Because maybe you're not the side of the road repair type or your break down is too big

  • Fire extinguisher

  • I like to keep this under my seat for quick action and won’t leave my driveway without one.

  • Jack & lug wrench that will work on your car

  • Spare tire or plug kit & Fix-a-Flat

  • If your car has 2 different size tires or custom off set wheels and you can't carry a spare that will fit all 4 corners, carry Fix-a-Flat

  • Tire gauge

  • Hub cap removal tool

  • Flashlight or a fully charged phone

  • Combination wrenches

  • 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17,19, 21mm are most common

  • 3/8 metric socket set & ratchet

  • Sparkplug, 8-19, universal, extensions (make sure you have the size you need to change the belt)

  • Small ball peen hammer

  • 10" adjustable wrench

  • Pliers

  • Locking, slip joint, linesman, dikes, and needle nose

  • Slotted & Philips screwdrivers

  • Test light (Can be use for static timing)

Daily Trips

  • Points file

  • Feeler gauge set

  • .006 valves, .016 points, .028 plugs

  • Knife

  • Wire brush

  • Jumper cables

  • Extendable magnet for when you drop things into tight areas

  • Zip ties

  • Bailing wire

  • Small spool of 14-gauge electrical wire

  • 3’ of wire with alligator clips on each end to use as a jumper wire

  • Emery cloth / sandpaper

  • Oil - 1 or 2qts

  • Fuses & bulbs

  • Electrical & duct tape

  • Hand cleaner – available in single use wipes

  • Gloves

  • Rags

  • Spare fan belt

  • Spare bulbs

  • Fuel filter

  • 3’ of fuel hose & a few spare clamps

  • Spare gas

  • Unreliable gas gauge? Carry an empty gas can if you don't mind walking or you can buy 4 cycle small engine fuel from Home Depot. Available in  ½ & 1 gallon cans, this prepackaged gas will stay fresh up to 5 years if unopened. A half gallon will likely get you 10 or so miles

For Longer Drives Add

  • Brake adjusting spoon

  • Digital voltmeter

  • Brake fluid

  • Electrical connectors & crimping tool

  • Bearing grease (Available in single use packets)

  • Generator brushes

  • Carb rebuild kit

  • Fuel pump

  • Accelerator cable

  • Clutch cable

  • Spare ignition parts

  • Spark plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires & coil

  • Spare gasket kit w/valve cover gaskets

  • Generator brushes

  • Carb rebuild kit

  • Accelerator cable

  • Clutch cable

  • wiper blades

  • Rain-x (available in single use packets)

Useful Garage Items

  • 1/4 metric socket set, ratchet & extensions

  • 1/2 metric socket set, ratchet & extensions

  • 1/2 breaker bar

  • Pipe that will fit over your breaker bar and extend its length and leverage

  • Hammers

  • Sledge, dead blow, rubber mallet etc.

  • Allen wrenchesall general sizes plus 17mm for trans plugs

  • Tach & dwell meter

  • Compression tester

  • Fuel pressure gauge

  • Timing light

  • Floor jack & jack stands
